Outstanding results in the elections of May 2021 saw the Liberal Democrats increase their number from 9 to 14 out of a total of 81 County Councillors.
Thanks to successes in subsequent by-elections the Group further increased its number to 16 with Harry Boparai elected Member for Sunbury Common & Ashford Common (Dec 2022) and Ashley Tilling, Member for Walton South & Oatlands (May 2023).
In July 2025 the then group leader Will Forster stepped down from his role to take up a seat in Parliament and the resulting by-election in Woking South was won by Louise Morales. In August the Liberal Democrats picked up a new seat when Andy Burton won the by-election in Hinchley Wood, Claygate & Oxshott.
Three further by-election wins in October 2025 have now taken the Liberal Democrats’ group to 19. Alan Ashbery (Camberley West) and Catherine Houston (Guildford South-East) both won seats previously held by the Conservatives, and Residents’ Association respectively, while Tony Pearce successfully held on to Caterham Valley.
The Liberal Democrats’ group is now the official opposition to the Conservative administration.
