Lib Dems welcome scrapping of “pig in a poke” Magna Carta scheme

16 Jan 2013

Commenting on the announcement that Surrey County Council has scrapped plans to spend £5 million on a Magna Carta Visitor Centre at Runnymede, John Orrick the Liberal Democrat Communities Spokesperson on Surrey County Council said:

"When the Conservative administration at County Hall decided to spend £5 million on the visitor centre, the equivalent of 1% on Council Tax, I said they had been sold a pig in a poke by Runnymede.

"Many Surrey residents who would have got no benefit from the centre would have had to dig deep in their pockets to pay for what amounted to little more than a vanity project by the Conservatives at County Hall.

"I hope that the important anniversary of the sealing of Magna Carta can now be celebrated in a way that is far cheaper, more imaginative and more inclusive of all of Surrey"
