Surrey Lib Dems welcome Superfast Broadband decision

Councillor Hazel Watson, the Liberal Democrat Leader of the Opposition on Surrey County Council, has welcomed the news that the Coalition Government's plans to bring superfast broadband to Surrey have been approved by the European Commission.

Hazel Watson said: "I welcome the Superfast Broadband project for Surrey. The investment by Surrey County Council of £20 million, with a further £11.8 million by BT and £1.3 million by central government, will be money well spent.

"Superfast Broadband in Surrey will be a major stepping stone in allowing new businesses to start up and for existing businesses to grow. It will help businesses to be competitive by providing an efficient resource.

"People are increasingly working from home, and Superfast Broadband is essential to enable that to happen. Less travel across the county to get to work will also reduce congestion on Surrey's busy roads.

"In the digital age Surrey residents are keen to access information as quickly and easily as possible, to which Superfast Broadband will make a big difference.

"Many residents want Superfast Broadband as soon as possible. I will do everything I can to support its roll-out throughout Surrey."
