TORY COMMITMENT TO CROSSRAIL 2 QUESTIONED AS PLANS ARE DROPPED FROM MANIFESTO
Liberal Democrat county councillors in Surrey have expressed their concern over the removal of any mention of Cross Rail 2 from the Conservative manifesto in the forthcoming General Election, casting doubt over their commitment to the project.
The proposed Crossrail 2 plans would connect north London to Surrey, with interchanges at rail routes through to Shepperton and Epsom, as well as linking up with Crossrail 1 stations in central London.
Cllr Stephen Cooksey, Liberal Democrat spokesperson for Transport, said today: "Crossrail 2 is a vital investment in the infrastructure of Surrey, which is why it appears in the Liberal Democrat manifesto. For the Conservatives to drop it from theirs is very worrying and casts doubt over the future for the project.
"It is predicted that around 200,000 jobs and 200,000 new homes will result from this scheme, as well as providing a huge boost to the overcrowded train network in Surrey. I therefore urge the Conservatives to publically back this crucial project and make it clear that Crossrail2 has a future whoever forms the next government".
